D-day aircraft

Postby RC_Bob » Tue Jun 19, 2012 11:24 am

Thought I'd share a few pics I took at the Airborne Museum in Normandy from a few days ago. Got some pretty legit D-day equipment!! Especially an original C-47 and Waco glider. Too bad I wasn't there a little sooner to see the anniversary celebrations.

Maybe I should think about Dynam's C-47.

Bob - nice pics, thanks for sharing. What's the story on the goggles with the slits?

Good question, cuz there wasn't really a label about it. The outfit he was wearing was definitely that of a pilot. I've heard about slit eyewear like that having to do w/bright light in snowy conditions like with Inuit snow goggles, so maybe they help when above a bright cloud layer of some sort.

It's strange cuz I've never seen any WW2 goggles like that before!

What a funny coincidence! I just visited the Reichstag today in Berlin and it turns out that inside the glass dome they have this shade that rotates parallel to the sun to protect the mirror column from bright light. The shade is actually a large wire grill similar to the guys goggles to let in partial light.
In the top right corner of the pic I took you can see part of the big grill (pic is kinda big, might have to stretch out your browser)

Hehe, Maybe I'll try some of those colorful sunglasses with slits in them the next time I come by the flying field :P
Probably be limiting my sight distance big time.
