Close by flying site for larger planes?!?

Postby RC_Bob » Sat Jun 02, 2012 10:56 pm

I brought up in the Rancho forum about how I have to be careful w/my big 90mm EDFs cuz the rangers spot them easily and tell me to be more cautious w/them, which I can totally understand w/the amount of power in my planes.
I can handle staying within the tight boundaries w/my F-16 that has flaps cuz it has always been a very floaty and stable bird at slow speeds. But my L-39 is outa the question when it comes to trying to stay w/in the boundaries on landing. I plan to make flaps but it's hard to say HOW much it'll help.

Does anyone know of a flying site or some sort of open field that I could possibly fly my bigger jets at? (that's hopefully not TOO close to residential property) Runway takeoff is a must for my big birds. I can deal w/dirt like rancho's no problem.

Personally I don't wanna go too far away to fly like all the way to Fremont or down w/the Tomcats in Morgan Hill. As a reference I live basically right next to downtown mountain view.

You should check out Bayfront Park, in Menlo Park. It is located next to Hwy 101. Take the Marsh Rd exit toward the bay- you will run into the park.

Is that site fairly safe now? I've heard a lot about the signal losses there. Hopefully that's just one section of the park?

Just FYI, there are a fair number of largish EDFs flying at RSA with no issues. I have a twin 70mm SU35, there is a 90mm F18 as well as a 90mm Eurofighter. All are about the same size as your L39.

yea I'm familiar w/the folks that fly those models, and I've been flyin my two 90mm planes at Rancho for a while. I'd just like to know what their experiences are w/ranger encounters about flyin over the lower parkin lots OCCASIONALLY when it comes to landing/takeoff since I see it a lot. I know I'm kinda emphasizin it a lot but that's my main problem :(

Next time I see my large scale jet Rancho buds I'll ask em about it.

We have had no issues. But then again, we don't fly over the lower parking lots.

well, I guess this has to do w/me choosing heavier setups in 90mm planes w/out thrust vectoring. I'll check out bayfront and ask around about other fields/clearings.

Tomcats is really the best place for the bigger planes. Not many places near Sunnyvale, Mountain View that allow planes. Most parks don't actually! We are lucky to be able to fly what we do where we do!! But if you find another place let me know...
