Got me a Hype Glider..

Postby genovia » Sat Aug 21, 2004 9:36 pm

Hello Gang,

I just bought a hyper DL glider from Bob (Thanks for the airplane Bob :) ) I've always wanted to fly one of these planes, I seem the guys in Baylands that flies one of these hand launch planes, and I'm facinated of they hand launch these birds and without motor in the nose, they are able to fly around looking for thermals. Now that I have one, wish me luck, but first. Check it out my new plane, nicely built and no dings :)

Question: What advise can you guys give me on how to put a handle or that CF thingy where I hold on in the tip of the wing? Mine doesn't come with a hand launch handle, little piece in the tip of the wing :(

G,

is this thing meant to be a HLG or DLG? For DLG, you will need a hard point and spar to support the load of sling shot. Does it has a hard point built in the tip?

You know how to fly something that does not has a motor?? :)

This is the "DL" version designed for Discus Launch. The wing can take it for sure, in fact it is over strong for this.

As for position of the peg cordwize, most guys put them at about 1/3rd cord from the leading edge. Spanwize, I'd put it as far outboard as you can, like less than an inch from the edge of the tip block. Go as far out as you dare structurally. The reason I say this is that the tip shape of the hyper will hurt the web of your finger as you throw if the peg is to far inboard.

If you follow my advice, your peg will be somplace in the balsa tip block, not the main wing. You should use a small round or oval patch of fairly heavy fiberglass, kevilar, or carbon cloth to reinforce where the hole for the peg will be made. A patch on both top and bottom which extends up onto the obichie wing skin tying the weak balsa block to the strong main wing pannel.

The peg could simply be a 1/4 inch od thick walled carbon tube. Better both airodynamically and for the comfort of your fingers would be a flat piece. This is what I'll do in the future, but have not personally tried it yet. The guys are making these flat pegs from solid unidirectional carbon in the dimintions of 1/16 x 3/8". Tips and edges are rounded.
