Slingshot...what happens when???
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What happens when 180 lbs. of granite slab hits a 13 oz. airframe a 70 MPH? Take a look....
I was heading up to Chico, CA to deliver some stone to a customer...thought I would take the Slingshot along to do a little thermal sniffing in the afternoon. It is hot up in Chico this time of year, so I figured it would be a good chance to catch my first thermal with this plane.
Just outside of Vacaville some guy in a Caddy cuts me off and hits his brakes...I hit mine and everything in the back seat headed forward into my freshly built Slingshot. You can imagine the words that escaped from my mouth.
Amazingly the wing survived with only a control horn tearing the bottom skin just a bit.
So all of you that helped with the build and suggested adding a rudder...you will get your wish. I have ordered a set of XP4 stabs from Denny at Polecat along with the carbon stab mount. I picked up two carbon booms from Aero Space Composites, one just like the one I broke (a little longer) and one tapered...could not make up my mind...so, I bought both...I will decide which one to use when the tails show up.
Now that I am modifying the boom...how much longer should I go to accommodate the new stabs? The original was 20 in.
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Kirk
