There are lots of flying sites in S.F. Two examples are Speedway Meadows and other spots in Golden Gate Park (time and people density dependant), or the reservoir roof on the block bounded by Sloat Avenue between 23rd and 22nd Avenues (below): Image

Pete— yes, the roof of the reservoir is quite solid and, as you point out, quite vast. One could also take off and land fixed wing models there as well.

I have been looking at San Francisco from the air by means of Google Earth and see all kinds of places to fly, including some big fields in and around the Presidio (can't tell about fences or controlled access but it is worth looking at from the ground) and several parks, a nice, big double baseball field on the South edge of Golden Gate Park, and others.

my buddy and i grew up in that area. we rode bikes, and tossed our aerobees while on top of the resevoir.

it is certainly big enough for 450 size helis, and ultra-micro airplanes. i would not recommend flying larger or faster models in that area, as it borders sloat blvd... one of the more busy streets in the sunset district. the size could distract a driver and cause an accident which you might be implicated in... or a lost RF link could easily cause property damage. YMMV

other places you might want to try:
the soccer fields in GG park. it's wide open, and not always used.
Crissy Field by the GG bridge - tho i'm not sure on the legality of flying in the presidio, and if you do, watch out for dogs off-leash
The parking lot @ CCSF

fwiw, flying at the polo fields is not allowed. i guess the horses in the stables might get easily spooked?
