Calling All Sabre/Mig Pilots

Calling All Sabre/Mig Pilots

Postby RedFive » Thu Jun 10, 2004 1:57 pm

Hi everyone.....I know there has got to be some other Wattage edf pilots out there. For me... the F86 was my first real taste of ducted fan. This particular plane is a survivor of some 300+ successful and unsuccessful flights. there was that 50mph collision with a tree, a 70mph midair with a slowflyer, and even a brief stint with a brushed motor. This plane continues to push my knowledge of edf and fuels my continued efforts regarding those flying "hair dryers".

Best Regards,

Randy

In its currnent configuration......

Mega 3 turn
Cut down Kyosho rotor
CC 35
Super BEC
Irate 1100s 4S2P LightFlightRC
23 Amps static WOT @ 327 watts
Slammed cannopy for reduced drag
Every structural reinforcement I could think of
The speed controller and super BEC moved into the "intake" for cooling.....not too worried about choking the fan cause it's got a cheeter. :)

Dual Cirus 4.4 keep the tail in line.....have some mixing to get a "rudder like" effect. Ditched the "tail bullet" I had on the back of the motor in favor of better cooling. The exit diameter is slightly decreased to increase efflux velocity. I think my Sabre is rather perverse.....but I know there are some other "sick puppies" out there....let's see what you've got.

Well...the Sabre continues to evolve. After blowing up my second Kyosho rotor, I've changed to a WeMoTec Minifan 480 rotor- so graciously supplied by our fearless moderator Nick. Guess the Kyosho wasn't designed to handle 300+ watts. :D Performance was great at 327 watts though. :(

Check out the rotor fragments embedded in the foam!

These are what was left after the blades let go in flight. Both times I was making climbing turns at 75% throttle. Nick will be doing a microscopic failure analysis on the rotors. I balanced each one as carefully as possible and no resonance was detected by my ear at any rpm. I can't stand the sound of an unbalanced fan. I realize that modiflying them to fit a different fan unit and exceeding their design parameters may have been contributing factors.

I am happy to report however, the Wemotec rotor was a success. 22 amps @ 309 watts Static WOT. 2 hard flights....no failure. Thrust is just shy of 1:1. Next we'll have Kasra radar it. If I can achieve 80mph flat and level....I think I could be happy. :D

Best Regards,

Randy

Here is the WeMoTec fan installed. Amp draw actually decreased compaired to the Kyosho. I have noticed a higher pitch at full throttle....this may be due to a higher RPM. I don't have a tach that can measure this. Flight impressions lead me to beliveve that the top end with this fan is greater....I have lost some acceleration. No worries though....hand launch is still possible at less that full throttle.
BTW Nick....do you know of a place where I can order you just the replacement rotor and spinner?

Best Regards,

Randy

Hey Randy,

Try,

http://www.warbirds-rc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

They have mini 480s in stock and may have parts if you call them up.

Cheers,
Nick
